Different Types Of Japanese Dolls

If one of your hobbies is collecting eastern art and decorations, then you shouldn`t forget about the Japanese Dolls. Whether you choose a wooden or a porcelain model, you should know that each and every model comes from hands that have learned the craft from their fathers and their fathers before them.  It is an art with a long and beautiful history.

However, in order to choose one for your collection or your living room, you should first look at the most common three of the most known types of Japanese Dolls.

1. Kokeshi. This is a wooden doll, with no arms or legs, characterized by long, cylindrical bodies, wide heads and very colorful kimonos. The faces are simply designed, in just a few lines, while the signature of the artist is placed on the bottom of the doll.

2. Bunraku. The name comes from the Bunrakuza theatre, where the dolls where first seen. They`re 2 – 4 feet tall, with arms and heads carved from wood, wihile the bodies are designed and dressed by master puppeteers. Bunraku Japanes Dolls are a beautiful item to add to any doll collection.

3. Hakata. Originating from Hakata, Japan, these dolls were usually made out of clay and biscuit fired, and offered as a gift to any ruler of Hakata, along with Buddhist temples. Later in the nineteenth century, they were taken by master craftsmen, taking the Hakata dolls to a completely new level.
